Chapter 12 - Past
Without some form of the red suit, he was just a fat man with a beard. Austin waved his hand in front of the display to watch what was supposed to be a vacationing Santa stretch and yawn again. His dad might get a kick out of it. The others would think it was lame, and rightfully so.
Austin moved down the aisle. He was beginning to think the Christmas section would not be the best place to find a present. He checked his watch. The time was, “Hurry up, you procrastinating moron!”
It was Christmas Eve and Austin was going to a Dirty Santa party at Sofie’s house. Her parents and his had become nearly as tight as Sofie and Amber. Austin felt like an outsider and knew he’d been invited out of obligation. He had planned to skip the party until his mom informed him that was not an option. He was not allowed to “snub” the Ennemosers any more than he was allowed to be by himself on Christmas Eve.
A part of him did want to go to the party anyway, the not insignificant part of him that wanted to see Sofie. He hadn’t seen her since he’d been home for Christmas Break. He’d actually seen very little of her since the night of the prom. Amber had suddenly spent all her time at Sofie’s house instead of the way it had been before the prom. And Sofie ducked away if he got a passing glimpse of her at school. He kissed her and she ran away and disappeared on him. The message was that she was not interested in dating the guy who called her a name she hated and laughed at her taste in cereal and once pelted her with water balloons on a dare from Dillon.
It had been months though. Maybe he wasn’t that guy anymore. Or maybe she could eventually grow to like that guy. If she wasn’t still freaked out about him stealing a premature kiss.
Austin had wandered into a section of towels and bedding while thinking about Sofie. Nothing there would work for the party. He made an abrupt right and found himself facing a jewelry counter. No. As he turned again though, a stand of crystal bracelets caught his eye. He reached out and fingered some purple beads as he remembered similar beads scattered across the carpet. He’d once broken a bracelet somewhat like this one during a skirmish with his sister.
Amber had yelled at him that it was Sofie’s bracelet while she tried to gather all the beads. She wasn’t able to put it back together and eventually admitted – when pressed by their mom – that it breaking was as much her fault as it was Austin’s. Sofie had never mentioned the loss. Did she care about the bracelet? Would she appreciate him trying to replace it years later or not even remember it?
Those were questions he couldn’t answer and didn’t have time to ponder. He moved
